Cover of a book with a ship in a storm.

Happy January, dear readers! We are working through another fabulous month, with so many great reads waiting for us this year. I am sharing a new book review, which is part of the blog tour from The Write Reads. I am going to say this before diving into the review of Irex … GET THE BOOK! You are going to love this one!

Irex: Book Blurb

In the harsh winter of December 1889, the sailing vessel Irex leaves Scotland bound for Rio de Janeiro. She carries three thousand tons of pig iron and just three passengers for what should be a routine voyage. But Captain Will Hutton discovers that one of his passengers hides a horrifying secret.

When the Irex is wrecked off the Isle of Wight six weeks later, it falls to the county coroner, Frederick Blake, to begin to unravel the events that overtook the doomed ship — but he soon finds that powerful forces within the British Establishment are working to thwart him. Locked in a race against time and the sinister agents sent to impede him, he gradually discovers that nothing aboard the Irex is what it first seemed…

Irex is an atmospheric mystery, set in a rich Victorian world, packed with intrigue, twists and colourful characters — the spellbinding first novel by Carl Rackman.

My Review:

Okay, first, I am going to admit – I am still reading this one, and I have roughly 25% to go before I finish! I could not complete it in time for the tour (so be watching later for anything updated I want to add). Second, holy cow! I am having a hard time putting this one down! I am trying to read as much as I can, but ya know – work. Anyway, my review …

This book is fabulous. The characters are relatable, and you can almost imagine yourself on board this vessel. Okay, I don’t want to give toooo much away, but ya’ll, oh my goodness. There are some twists and turns that you will not see coming, so be prepared to gasp out loud every so often. Irex is one of those books that should be on every bookcase. The adventure in this one will have you twisting like a leaf on the sea – and that is not a pun on the book. This has been one of those “I really don’t want to put this down and adult” type of books.

I am looking forward to additional books from this author, and am sure that my rating is not going to change in the last bits of this book. It is a solid 4.75/5 read for me!
